Good morning Phoenix! It's time for a "Did You Know?" list. This one is quite interesting.
Top 10 Famous People that you may not know have disabilities of some sort:
• Rowan Atkinson (of Mr. Bean fame) – he has a stutter and speech impediment. He's worked hard to overcome it.
• Tom Cruise – dyslexia diagnosed at age 7, and considered to be a functional illiterate. His involvement with the Church of Scientology helped to improve his comprehension, as he used the study techniques of L. Ron Hubbard.
• Beethoven – one of the most famous composers of all time was deaf. He lost 31% of his hearing by age 31. By clenching a stick between his teeth and holding it to the keyboard, he could hear some small sounds.
• Demi Lovato – bulimia and bipolar disorder. Her mother had bulimia, and her father is bipolar, and she inherited both from them.
• Mark Zuckerberg – founder of Facebook is colorblind. FB is blue because it is the richest color for him to see.
• R.J. Mitte – (Walter Jr. in Breaking Bad) has cerebral palsy. He worked hard and could walk without the aid of crutches, but reverted back to them to play the role of Walter Jr.
• Tim Howard – goalie for Colorado Rapids soccer team and Team USA has Tourette’s Syndrome.
• Katie LeClerc – (actress: Switched at Birth) – Meniere’s Disease, which affects her hearing.
• Michael Phelps – Olympic Swimmer – ADHD
• Cameron Diaz – OCD. Can’t open doors using door handles with her hands, using her elbows instead due to her fear of germs. She has cleaned the doorknobs in her house so often, they have changed color.

Good afternoon Phoenix! It’s Thursday, so to shake things up a bit, here’s some history for you.
On this day in:
• 1920 : 4,000 individuals are rounded up in a single night mostly members of the Industrial Workers of the World union who were suspected of being suspected radical leftists who were either deported or jailed as part of the Palmer Raids. The Palmer Raids (named for Alexander Mitchell Palmer, United States Attorney General) were a series of controversial raids by the U.S. Justice and Immigration Departments from 1919 to 1921 on suspected radical leftists in the United States. These arrests were made under the provisions of the Espionage Act of 1917 and the Sedition Act of 1918.
• 1977: Snow fell on Miami for the first time in history.
• 1983: Apple announces "The Apple Lisa" the first commercial personal computer to have a graphical user interface GUI and a computer mouse. The Lisa was targeted at businesses and cost a massive $9,995 (over $20,000 in today's money) and because of its high cost never made the impact Apple hoped for.
• 2006: Moscow is suffering it's coldest weather since 1979, Moscow is used to extreme cold but -32C has closed schools, trolleybuses and trams have stopped running and Power rationing has been implemented.
• 2010: Kraft who are attempting a hostile bid for Cadbury's have raised their bid again, but analysts are unsure if the American confectioner Hershey will come in with a higher offer. (Kraft Foods did take over Cadbury in February)

TGIF Phoenix! How about some Friday Flicks? Here’s one I’m sure you will enjoy. You all like vampires, right? (of course you do – or you wouldn’t be here!)
Opening today is the newest installment in the Underworld franchise, Underworld: Blood Wars.
Plot:
The next installment in the blockbuster franchise, UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS follows Vampire death dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) as she fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. With her only allies, David (Theo James) and his father Thomas (Charles Dance), she must stop the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice.
Trivia:
• It was originally thought that this was Kate Beckinsale's last movie playing the character Selene, but Len Wiseman has confirmed a sixth movie is in development with Beckinsale reprising her character.
• This movie contains 4 cast members from the Game of Thrones (2011) universe. This includes Charles Dance (Thomas) who portrayed Tywin Lannister, Tobias Menzies (Marius) who portrayed Edmure Tully, James Faulkner (Cassius) who portrays Randyll Tarly and Lara Pulver (Semira) who voiced Lady Elissa Forrestor in Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series (2014).
• It will be revealed where Michael Corvin has been since disappearing in the preceding film, Underworld: Awakening (2012).
• The ending in Underworld: Blood Wars (2016) is open-ended which will lead to the beginning of the sixth film in the series says producer Len Wiseman. Which is also said to be starring Kate Beckinsale for the role of Selene one last time, for one final fight which starts in this film, the release date, director, plot and title have not yet been confirmed for the sixth film.
• This will be the first time a "Resident Evil" movie and an "Underworld" movie have both been released in the same month.

Good morning and TGIF Phoenix! It’s time for Friday Flicks to start the New Year’s weekend off right.
This week’s selection is currently in theaters: Rogue One – A Star Wars Story.

Plot:
All looks lost for the Rebellion against the Empire as they learn of the existence of a new super weapon, the Death Star. Once a possible weakness in its construction is uncovered, the Rebel Alliance must set out on a desperate mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. The future of the entire galaxy now rests upon its success.

Trivia:
• This film is set days before the events of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) and five years after Star Wars Rebels (2014).
• Costume designer David Crossman stated that some of the original costumes used in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977), Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983) were used in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016).
• This is the first Star Wars film in which no one utters the name "Skywalker".
• The character of Grand Moff Tarkin, played in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) by Peter Cushing, is revived and "performed" by Cushing despite his death in 1994. Cushing is resurrected with CGI and actually performed by Guy Henry. Cushing receives a special "with special recognition to Peter Cushing" honorable mention in the end credits. Similarly, the character of young Princess Leia has a brief cameo, with much help recreating her facial features with CGI, while physically performed by Ingvild Deila.
• Hidden Mickey: During the battle of Scarif, an exploding fighter ship plumes smoke in the shape of Mickey Mouse's head. Around 1 hour and 45 mins.

Goofs:
• In the opening sequence, the Imperial shuttle is flying to Galen's farm to take him back to the Empire, and can be seen flying over Jyn's head as she runs back to the farm to warn her parents. The shuttle knows where Galen lives and presumably flies in a straight line, yet arrives well after Jyn arrives, leaving Jyn plenty of time to talk to her father and be hidden in the cave by her mother.
• When the shuttle lands on Scarif all of the palm trees surrounding the landing pad are coconut palms. Later an exterior shot of the shuttle shows date palms with pruned leaf bases. These palms are easily available and transplanted as mature trees as the trees in this shot were.
• During the space battle over Scarif, in one shot of Gold Leader's Y-Wing cockpit, the edge of the Death Star's equatorial trench can be seen through the back window of the cockpit behind him. This is reused footage from the rebel attack on the Death Star from Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.
• At the first appearance of Orson Krennic the wind is blowing very strong and his cape is moving very strong too. But during the close-up scenes the cape almost doesn't move. In different shots, it's moving strong again.
• When landing the Transport the crew is preparing for landing as they deploy landing gear. You even hear them say that the landing gear is locked in position. Minutes later, when they actually are landing, you see the landing gear coming out of the Transport, not being deployed earlier.

Good morning Phoenix! How about some Thursday Trivia? Here’s some New Year’s Eve Fun Facts for you!
• Auld Lang Syne is sung at midnight to toast in the New Year. The song was composed by Robert Burns sometimes in the 1700's. The term means "old long ago" or "the good old days."
• Stats of the first New York ball: 700 pounds; 5 feet in diameter. The ball was made from wood and iron. The very first ball lowering in Times Square was December 31, 1907.
• The modern ball that is dropped is made from Waterford Crystal and weights over 1,000 pounds. There are over 9,000 LED lights, but uses hardly any energy. The ball begins to drop at 11:59 and completes the journey exactly at midnight to ring in the New Year.
• The ball was not lowered in 1942 and 1943 due to wartime restrictions.
• The Catholic Church denounced any New Year's celebrations as paganism. Ironically, as Christianity rolled through the world, the Catholic community devised other types of celebrations for the "Feast of Christ's Circumcision," which is observed the same as New Year's Eve and Day.
• It is often thought that the first visitors you see after ringing in the New Year would bring you good or bad luck, depending on who you keep as friends and enemies. That's why most people celebrating on New Year's Eve often do so with friends and family.
• If the first person to visit you was a tall and dark-haired man, this was especially lucky.
• Items or food that is ring-shaped is also good luck. This symbolizes "coming full circle", which is what one year does. Some cultures eat ring-like food through the evening and through the night to ensure that good luck will be bestowed upon everyone who eats.
• Black-eyed peas (usually with ham) are often consumed in certain parts of the United States. These are thought to bring good fortune in cultures around the world, not just in the U.S.
• Other foods that are eaten on New Year's Eve are cabbage because the leaves represent prosperity. Ham (or a hog) also symbolizes prosperity. In Asian cultures, rice is a hearty and lucky staple that is eaten around midnight to signify the coming year of fortune.

Good morning Phoenix! TGIF! Hope you’re all ready for the holidays, or ready for them to be over. *grins*
It’s time for a Friday Flicks. I have a new release holiday movie for you that is premiering today, and sounds hilarious. It’s called “Why Him?” and stars Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad fame and James Franco, so it’s bound to be funny.
Plot:
Over the holidays, Ned (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective but loving dad and his family visit his daughter at Stanford, where he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). The rivalry develops, and Ned's panic level goes through the roof when he finds himself lost in this glamorous high-tech world and learns that Laird is about to pop the question.
Trivia:
• According to Megan Mullally, the cast was given free access to improvise as much as they wanted to and eventually 240 hours of films was shot on camera, which had to be trimmed to 90 minutes for the final film.
• The 'Why Him' poster was featured in season 9 of How I Met Your Mother episode 12, air date 12/03/13 a full 3 years prior to big screen release!
• Based on UK television show "Cuckoo."
• Director John Hamburg was actor James Franco's professor at New York University.

Morning Phoenix and TGIF! Welcome to another edition of Friday Flicks. Today’s selection is currently in theaters and stars Kate McKinnon (from SNL fame), Jason Bateman, TJ Miller, and Jennifer Aniston.
Office Christmas Party! It’s rated R, so not suitable for kids, but looks to be a laugh riot.
Plot:
When the CEO (Jennifer Aniston) tries to close her hard-partying brother's branch, he (T.J. Miller) and his Chief Technical Officer (Jason Bateman) must rally their co-workers and host an epic office Christmas party in an effort to impress a potential client and close a sale that will save their jobs.

Trivia:
• The title of the movie was inspired by an SNL skit called "Office Christmas Party"
• Both actresses Kate McKinnon and Vanessa Bayer are cast members of Saturday Night Live.
• Karan Soni and T.J. Miller have previously starred together in Deadpool (2016).
• Fifth collaboration between Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston. They previously starred together in The Break-Up (2006), The Switch (2010), Horrible Bosses (2011), and Horrible Bosses 2 (2014).
• The first part of the opening credits features stills, outtakes, and alternate lines

Afternoon and TGIF Phoenix.  It’s time for some Friday Flicks.  I’ll be highlighting Christmas and Christmas themed movies this month.

After my post yesterday, one of the comments about favorite holiday movies was Polar Express.  That’s the one I’ll highlight today.

Plot:  This is the story of a young hero boy on Christmas Eve who boards on a powerful magical train that's headed to the North Pole and Santa Claus's home. What unfolds is an adventure which follows a doubting boy, who takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole; during this ride, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery which shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe.

Trivia:

·         When the Hero Boy first meets the Hobo on the roof of the train, he is playing the carol "Good King Wenceslas." The story of Saint Wenceslas I, Duke of Bohemia is that of a king braving the harsh winter to bring alms to the poor on the Feast of Stephan, December 26th. His page finds he can't go on through the harsh conditions and is directed to walk in the footprints that the king has made in the snow. The Hobo directs Hero Boy to follow behind him and ultimately helps him reach the engine before they make it to the tunnel, thus allowing him to find and help his friend. This is also a representation of the Holy Spirit idea of the Hobo, that he guides those who believe in Him to safety, even in perilous times.

·         The address spoken by the conductor early in the film "11344 Edbrooke" is the real address of Robert Zemeckis' childhood home. The home is in a south side of Chicago neighborhood called Roseland.

·         A close examination of all the ticket numbers reveals that they all contain the number "1225" in them. Pere Marquette No. 1225 was used as a model for the Polar Express locomotive. 12-25 also refers to the date of Christmas - December 25th.

·         When Hero Boy falls asleep, the clock in his bedroom reads 10:20 - the same time as the clock in Scrooge's bedroom when Marley's ghost appears, in the Alastair Sim version of A Christmas Carol (1951).

·         The Polar Express is another Christmas Carol movie. Hero Boy is Scrooge and doesn't believe in Santa anymore causing the 3 ghosts of Christmas (the Hobo, Conductor, and Santa) to change him forever. The Hobo is the Ghost of Christmas Past, and plays the role of Christmas Future. He tries to intimidate Hero Boy into changing his ways using only himself instead of the future. The Conductor is the Ghost Christmas Present and is in charge of keeping order in the present to get Hero Boy to Santa. Finally, Santa is Christmas Future and changes Hero Boy forever, like Scrooge was. They even pay homage to Dickens' classic by having a Scrooge puppet dance on screen briefly. (Controlled by Christmas Past)

Goofs:

·         When the train runs into the caribou, the noise they are making is actually that of elk.

·         Know-It-All states that the train is a Baldwin 2-8-4 locomotive built in 1931. The Polar Express was modeled from plans of Pere Marquette 1225 which is a 2-8-4 type built by Lima Locomotive Works in 1941.

·         Throughout the movie, the number of cars on the train changes, from just three, to as many as eleven plus. This is most obvious when the hobo and Boy are skiing on the roofs of the cars, and when they are on the ice tack.

·         The first time the Boy goes downstairs on Christmas eve there is a red snowman skirt on the tree. Then on Christmas morning, as the train is going around the tree the skirt on the tree is yellow kind of color and has bells on it.

·         All the characters when they ring the bell hold it by the bell instead of the ribbons. The bell will not ring if this is done.

Good morning Phoenix! Today is Friday, so it is time for another edition of Friday Flicks. Christmas Day is 1 month from today. Who’s done with their Christmas shopping? Who hasn’t started yet? *grins*
Today’s selection is playing now in theaters: Bad Santa 2. It took them only 13 years to get this sequel out. Billy Bob Thornton reprises his role as the title character, with Kathy Bates as his mother.

Plot: Fueled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred, Willie teams up once again with his angry little sidekick, Marcus, to knock off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve.

Trivia:
• In this film, Billy Bob Thornton plays the son of Kathy Bates. In reality, he is only seven years younger.
• Brett Kelly (AKA Thurman Murman) will return; he is 22 years old now. Brett Kelly was slimmer after becoming an adult but gained more than 40 pounds to reprise his role as Thurman. He consumed many smoked meat sandwiches in Montreal, where the film was shot, to quickly obtain the desired weight.
• Willie claims his birthday is August 4th in the film. This is actually Billy Bob's birthday.
• Lauren Graham could not reprise her role as Sue, due to her commitment to the Gilmore Girls revival on Netflix.

Good morning Phoenix! Are you ready for some Friday Flicks? Today’s selection opens in theaters today, so for Mira and the rest of you Harry Potter fans, here we go with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Plot:
The year is 1926 and Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident...were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt's fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.
Trivia:
• Within the Harry Potter universe, Newt Scamander's "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" was first published in 1927 and became a massive bestseller, as well as an approved textbook at Hogwarts. By the mid-1990s, when the Harry Potter series is set, it was in its 52nd edition. Scamander also has the distinct honor to have his own Chocolate Frog Card.
• The name Newt Scamander appears on the Marauder's Map in the movie Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004).
• Was originally intended to be a trilogy, but as of October 2016 it has been confirmed as a 5-part movie series.
• It has been revealed that "Ilvermorny" will be the name of the American School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (referenced, but supposedly not featured in this movie), much like Hogwarts is for the UK.
• Author and screenwriter J.K. Rowling has announced that this is first of a series of five and she has stated that she will be writing the screenplay to every single one of the films. The two other sequels have already been announced and been a release date 2018 and 2020 however there is no date for the other two sequels, so there is no knowing how long this series will go on for, although she has announced that it won't continue for as long the Harry Potter series.
• Saoirse Ronan, Dakota Fanning, Kristen Stewart, and Lili Simmons were considered for the role of Queenie before Alison Sudol was cast.
• 1926 the year the film is set is also the year Voldemort was born.
• The pendant that Graves gives to Credence is The Mark of the Deathly Hallows, the same pendant worn by Xenophilious Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010).

• Birds do not urinate. They have no urethra. Their only method of elimination is through their anus. (and onto your car windshield)

Good morning Phoenix. It’s time once again for Friday Flicks. It’s Veterans Day, so be sure to honor all veterans, past and present.
The selection for today honors those who served – Hacksaw Ridge. It tells the story of WWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, who served during the Battle of Okinawa. He refused to kill people, and became the first Conscientious Objector in American history to be awarded the Medal of Honor.
Trivia:
• When asked how many lives he saved, he says approximately 50. However, individuals that witnessed the heroic event said it was closer to 100. The mutual agreement was reached at approximately 75.
• Pfc. Desmond Doss was not wounded and evacuated in a daylight assault at Hacksaw Ridge. He was wounded a couple of weeks later in the Okinawan Campaign during a night attack near Shuri. As per his Medal of Honor citation, he was wounded in the legs by a grenade but had to wait 5 hours before stretcher bearers could reach him, during which time he dressed his own wounds. While being carried back to safety by three stretcher bearers, they were attacked by a Japanese tank. At which time Doss crawled off the stretcher to a more seriously wounded man and insisted the others evacuate that soldier and then return for himself. While waiting for the stretcher to return, he was shot by a sniper as he was being carried by another soldier. Thus, causing a compound fracture on his arm, for which he improvised a splint using a rifle stock. He then crawled 300 yards to an Aid Station for treatment.
• Not the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor. Sergeant Alvin York was a conscientious objector also. Gary Cooper portrayed him in "Sergeant York". According to Wikipedia, "He [Sergeant York] also disclaimed ever having been a conscientious objector." The important difference being that York did carry a weapon but Doss did not.
• Producer Hal B Wallis had previously tried to buy this story from Desmond Doss in the 50's, and hoped that Audie Murphy would star but Doss had no interest in motion pictures and didn't want his story turned into a typical Hollywood movie.
• The film actually received a nine minute and forty-eight seconds standing ovation, Gibson timed it himself.
Goofs:
• Harold Doss (Desmond's brother) was wearing an Army uniform at the kitchen table when in fact he enlisted in the Navy and served aboard the USS Lindsey.
• Desmond Doss was not the first Medal of Honor winner to claim conscientious objector status. Alvin York claimed that status when he registered for the draft in 1917 but his claim was rejected.

Good morning Phoenix! It’s time for some Friday Flicks! Since Halloween is over, we’re done with the Fright Flicks for now…. I’m sure you’re glad about that!
This week’s selection opens in theaters today, and promises to be a powerful film. It is based on a true story – Loving.
Plot: Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple, are sentenced to prison in Virginia in 1958 for getting married. The only way to avoid prison time is to forever leave the town and State where they were born and raised, never to return. Homesick amid the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s, Mildred writes to Attorney General Robert Kennedy. The ACLU takes their case before the US Supreme Court. The rest is history.
Trivia:
• Before their 1967 Supreme Court victory, Mildred and Richard Loving had two years earlier lost a lower-court appeal of their conviction for violating the Virginia law against interracial marriage. The judge who refused to vacate that conviction, Caroline County Circuit Court Judge Leon M. Bazile, wrote in his decision that "almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his [arrangement] there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix."
• The U.S. Supreme Court decision of Loving v. Virginia (388 U.S. 1, argued on April 10, 1967, and decided June 12, 1967) unanimously held that Virginia's "Racial Integrity Act of 1924," which forbade marriage between people of different races, was unconstitutional. This decision therefore effectively voided all such laws in other states as well (at the time, interracial marriage was still illegal in at least 15 other states) and was used as precedent in Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 Supreme Court decision that likewise declared all laws banning same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional.
• Director Jeff Nichols was able to tell the story of the Loving family as accurately as possible by relying on Nancy Buirski's documentary The Loving Story (2011), which captured many details of their private lives: "We had this beautiful documentary footage unearthed from the mid-'60s where we got to go into their home and see them and watch them," Nichols said. "It's an unusual thing to have access to." [2016]
• Mildred Delores Jeter Loving's 2008 New York Times obituary reported that her ancestry was both part African American and part Native American on both sides: Rappahannock on her maternal side; Cherokee on her father's. The obituary also said that she preferred to self-identify as Native American rather than African American.
• Received a standing ovation at its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2016.
