BB 3/5/15

Afternoon Phoenix, and welcome to another edition of Throwback Thursday.
In the 1920’s, there was a housing boom as WW I ended, and troops returned home and started families.
Did you know that back then, you could order a do-it-yourself home building kit from the Sears Roebuck catalog? Honor Bilt homes were sold through the Sears shopping catalogs. Honor Bilt self build were one of the most popular self build homes in the nation, and about 100,000 were sold.
This example is from the 1927 catalog: The Gladstone model was a 2 story home featuring 3 bedrooms, living room, dining room, kitchen and bathroom. Its cost was $2025 “ready cut”. Low monthly payments were $35 per month.
If you preferred the one story Crescent model, it would run you $2436 or $40 per month.
Take a good look at the picture. Chances are you can still find homes like this in existence today.
Have a fangtastic day, and remember, we're getting closer to the weekend!

  • Sue M. Van I read about this from somewhere else awhile back. Pretty incredible. Who could imagine a $35 house payment?
