BB 3/16/16

Good morning Phoenix and welcome to Wacky Wednesday!

Today’s list is:  10 Illegal Foods

·         Tomato ketchup:  Banned in France for cultural reasons.  It is believed that ketchup masks flavors, preventing a true experience of French cuisine.
·         Somosas:  Banned in Somalia.  The group Al-Shabaab banned samosas in Somalia.  They were thought to bear too close a resemblance to the Christian Holy Trinity. It is a triangle shaped fried or baked pastry with a savory filling.
·         Haggis:  Banned in US.  A ban has been in place for over 40 years in the US because haggis contains sheep lung.
·         Kinder Eggs:  Banned in US, due to the choking hazard of the toy inside.  60,000 Kinder Eggs were seized by US customs in 2011.
·         Foie Gras:  Banned in over 14 countries and several US states.  The force feeding of geese to swell their livers to 10 times the normal size is seen as cruel.
·         Absinthe:  Banned in New Zealand and Vanuatu.  Banned for 100 years in France until recently, but illegal in Vanuatu and parts of New Zealand.  The wormwood in absinthe was said to cause hallucinations.
·         Ortolan:  Banned in France.  Bird fattened up, drowned in Armagnac, roasted and eaten whole – including the bones.  Banned in France because the ortolans are diminishing in number.
·         Japanese Puffer Fish:  Banned in EU.  Japanese delicacy known for being deadly poisonous if prepared incorrectly.  Illegal in the EU, Vietnam has also banned catching and selling the fish.
·         Casu Marzu:  Banned in the US.  Sardinian cheese made with fly larvae.  The maggots are meant to be consumed too.  Banned for a time in the EU, and still illegal in the US.
·         Surstromming:  Banned on several airlines.  Swedish fermented herring, classed as a dangerous weapon, it is potentially explosive in tin containers.  Just enough salt is used to prevent the raw fish from rotting.  It is fermented at least six months, giving it its characteristic strong smell and acidic taste.

Have a fangtastic Hump Day my friends!<3 Brock V"""V
