BB 12/14/15

Good morning Phoenix! It’s time once again for Movie Mondays! Today’s little gem is an oldie, and I wonder if anyone has seen it, other than fans of Mystery Science Theater.

It’s simply called – wait for it – Santa Claus. It came out in 1959.

Plot: A terrible movie that swings back into good graces for going the extra mile. Like a dream induced by old fruitcake, Santa Claus follows the titular character as he battles Lucifer to win back the love of Mexican children. That it became one of the highlights of Mystery Science Theater 3000 should tell you something.

Trivia:
• This film did not receive a general release in the United States. The U.S. distributor, K. Gordon Murray, booked the film as a special children's matinée attraction in which the film would only be shown once or twice.
• While billed simply as "El Diablo" ("The Devil") in the credits, Pitch's character name in the original version is "Precio" ("Price").
• The movie was featured on Red Letter Media's Christmas episode of Best of the Worst.
• The slightly edited and dubbed version was released in the US by K.Gordon Murray in 1960. This version was also given the Mystery Science Theatre treatment.

Goofs:
• The text on the burning newspaper changes from English to Spanish between shots.
• Santa uses an "earscope" - an ear with a spinning radar-like screen behind it - to listen to three children whispering. But minutes earlier, he had used the exact same device as a "dreamscope" to tune in on a child's dream.
• When Santa Claus starts delivering presents he has to jump of a roof using a umbrella as a parachute, while he gently goes down a rope can be seen lowering him.
• The model of the B-36 heavy bomber on the rich boy's bedroom wall has its wings put on backwards.
Enjoy and have a fangtastic day!
